Your guide to the benefits of probiotics

  • October 5, 2021

We’ve all heard about the magic of probiotics but what do they actually do and how can they help our bodies stay happy, healthy and well? We break down the important information you need to know, and how you can get your hands on some of the good stuff.

  • The basics

According to the fine folk over at the World Health Organization, probiotics are “live microorganisms which, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host.” To achieve true probiotic status, these microorganisms must be alive at the time of indigestion and ingested in a dose high enough to cause an effect. Put simply? Our digestive system is full of bacteria — good guys and bad guys. Probiotics are the good bacteria that helps maintain or improve your gut microflora. When you consume foods or beverages containing probiotics, you’re adding more good bacteria to help in the fight for good digestion.

  • Why do probiotics matter?

It seems there are a number of factors that can mess with your intestinal balance and decrease the level of beneficial bacteria in your gut including stress, antibiotics, some medications, hormonal changes, age, poor diet and illness. By consuming probiotic filled food or drinks each day, you can do your part to help keep your gut well balanced and happy. Extra benefit? Because 70% of our immune system is in our digestive system – keeping it as happy as possible can also support a healthy immune system. Winner winner!

  • Probiotics and nudie

According to a 2019 Digestive & Immune Health survey by Kerry Global Consumer, 75% of those who consume probiotics globally, consume them in fortified food or beverages. That’s why we’re so excited to announce that two of our new nudie smoothies are filled with the benefits of added probiotics – more specifically the Bacillus Coagulans strain, which is what we use at nudie.

  • Goodness hidden in food

Now that we know how good probiotics are for us – it’s extra convenient that these little powerhouse bacteria are naturally found in plenty of everyday foods. Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains are present in a wide variety of food and fermented products, including non-dairy yogurt. It’s important to keep in mind that while foods like kimchi and sauerkraut contain live bacteria and have been associated with health benefits, they’re not considered to include true probiotics as these foods have not been the subjects of human clinical studies, and the adequate amount that must be consumed to gain the health benefit of probiotics has not yet been determined.

  • Say my strain, say my strain…

Probiotics have been widely studied for decades and have real benefits across a range of different health areas. Certain probiotic strains have been linked with positive health effects including digestive health, immune health, women’s health and even oral health. But while it might seem like all probiotics are the same – there’s actually a big difference in the strains of probiotics and the benefits these can provide. Be sure to research the strain of probiotic you’re looking to try to ensure it aligns with your overall health goals.
