The top 6 movies to get you in the mood for winter

  • June 14, 2022

It’s a Friday night or chilly weekend and there’s nothing left to do but relax on the lounge with a family film or two. To help get you in the mood for the cooler months ahead, here are our fave winter flicks to cosy up with when home is the only place you want to be. OK, so you might be wondering, ‘what the heck is a winter movie?’ but it’s simple! A winter flick is anything that helps you feel cosy, warm and like cuddling up with your Ugg boots and hot water bottle. Simply grab a snack, turn the lights down, find your warmest blanket and press play.

  • 1. Sleepless in Seattle (1993)

Taking place during the best time of the year (Christmas, of course), this romantic comedy covers the chilly terrain or Seattle and New York to help transport you to a world where it’s not above 30 degrees every Christmas. Making it even better is an array of stellar 90s winter fashion including chunky scarves, large overcoats and warm sweaters. A perfect option for those nights when you’re home alone without a distraction in the world.

  • 2. The Mighty Ducks (1992)

Grab the kids – it’s time for a 90s classic! If your little ones have seen and loved The Mighty Ducks reboot on Disney Plus, then the original will really blow their minds. So well loved and engrained into the cultural zeitgeist of the time – this flick went on to spawn two sequels and make a star out of a very young Joshua Jackson. Why do we love it? Well, it’s got three of our favourite things: ice skating, lifelong friendships and no smart phones.

  • 3. Little Women (1994)

The eternally beloved story of the March sisters by Louisa May Alcott has captured our hearts and minds for more than 100 years, and with good reason. Following the trailblazing Jo, Meg, Amy and Beth as they grow up in chilly Concord, Massachusetts during the Civil War, this story never fails to remind us of the cooler months and the simple blessings of a warm home and nourishing food at the table.

  • 4. Frozen (2013)

We were never going to be able to compile this list without mentioning the one, the only, Frozen. While the title says it all, this flick isn’t just about ice castles and snowmen. It’s a lovely tale of sisterhood and overcoming the internal battles and self-limitations that can often hold us back.

  • 5. Cool Runnings (1993)

Fun for the kids and adults alike. A much-loved comedy for many reasons – Cool Runnings tells the true story of Jamaica’s inclusion at the winter Olympics competing in the bobsledding category. A tale of hardship, hard work and the power in following your dreams – this is one inspiring tale. Plus, all the ice makes it perfect winter viewing.

  • 6. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (2005)

From snow to fantasy, heroic characters and devious villains –The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe is a family favourite, whether you’ve read the books or prefer the film version. Set in the land of Eternal Winter, this flick follows the Pevensie family as they come up against the evil White Witch and try to bring back Springtime.
