The fruits and veggies in season this winter

  • August 24, 2021

Discover which of Mother Nature’s finest gifts are waiting to be enjoyed, and how you can make the most of this seasonal goodness one sip and bite at a time.

With the changing of each season, a new batch of fresh and diverse produce becomes available, helping to nourish our bodies and minds. While it might be chilly outside, there are still plenty of delicious fruits and veggies just waiting to come out and play. Best of all, these delicious snacks, bites and delights are jam-packed with even more vitamins and nutrients to help us stay fighting fit at this time of year.

  • The citrus craze

Did you know seasonable produce, particularly in winter, is naturally higher in Vitamin C, which helps us ward off colds and strengthen our immune system? It even helps contribute to cell protection from free radical damage, as well as normal collagen formation for healthier bones, teeth, gums and skin! For some delicious in-season Vitamin C benefits, be sure to grab a handful of your favourite citrus fruit. Yep, mandarins, oranges and blood oranges are all in season and are just waiting to be consumed. At nudie, we’ve got more citrus fruit than you can poke an orange peel at – just waiting to be used in a range of our favourite nudie juices.

  • The orange crunch

The coolest thing about in-season fruit and veggies is that they actually boast more flavours and textures than those that aren’t in season. Yep, true story! This is because they come fresh – straight from the farm to your fork. This shorter farm-to-plate period means nutrients like Vitamin C, antioxidants and folate aren’t lost through excessive storage or transportation. This is great for us and great for Mother Nature, too! Each winter, the carrot harvest gifts us with plenty of the crunchy, orange good stuff – providing carrot fans with a range of health benefits. Did you know carrots are an excellent source of beta carotene, fibre, vitamin K1, potassium and antioxidants? They even boost eye health, heart health and fight cholesterol. Enjoy yours on the go or add some carrot to your next salad or roast dinner. We love nothing more than drinking carrot juice each day and dipping a few sticks into a delicious plate of hummus to keep the 3pm snack attacks at bay.

  • A slice that’s nice

If you’re keen on snapping up all the health benefits that come with eating seasonably, be sure to stock up on apples and pears, which went into season at the end of March and are still tasting just as good as ever. Whether as juice, a snack on their own or as an addition to your breakfast porridge, you can’t go wrong with the sweet and comforting taste of apple and pear. Both also carry a range of health benefits that can’t be beat. Apples can improve gut health through their fibre content and may help reduce high blood pressure and cholesterol. Pears on the other hand are rich in essential antioxidants, dietary fibre and plant compounds. They can support a healthy weight and reduce the risk of diabetes and heart disease. What’s not to love?
