Food and drinks that can help boost your immunity

  • August 31, 2021

Who knew feeling awesome was just one chew or sip away?

Winter may be coming to an end but the desire to keep our immune systems strong and healthy is still front of mind. Thankfully there are plenty of delicious and nutritious foods and drinks that can help support a strong immune system. We break down some of the best ways to fuel your body and feel your best.

  • Fight the sniffles

To help your body battle the common cold, it’s important to maintain a healthy and happy immune system. To help you along the way, be sure to include the basics in your everyday diet, whether frozen or fresh, such as green leafy veggies and delicious fruit. Some of our favourite immune-boosting vegetables include broccoli, which is packed with Vitamin A, C and E, spinach, which is super rich in Vitamin C and capsicum, which is bursting with Vitamin C and beta carotene. If you’re after something to sooth a sore throat or help with nausea, be sure to grab some fresh ginger and add shavings to your favourite dishes or hot water for a zesty, healing brew.

  • Good culture

All hail the mighty powers of probiotics! Not only can they be good for immunity and gut health (depending on the strain) they’ve also shown signs of improving skin health, too! While getting your probiotic fix from supplements is pretty popular – don’t forget you can also get a dose of this beneficial bacteria from a range of fermented foods. This includes sauerkraut, which is thinly shredded cabbage that’s been fermented by lactic acid bacteria, as well as our other favourite – Kimchi. Although cabbage is the main ingredient here too, Kimchi’s delicious flavour comes from a mix of spices including garlic, ginger and chilli flakes. If you’re not much of a cabbage fan, why not give tempeh a go instead? This fermented soybean product has a nutty, earthy flavour and is often enjoyed by vegetarians as a meat substitute.

  • Keep your fluids up

From hot teas to wholesome broths, the power of water and the benefits of nutrient-dense juice made from 100% real fruit – there’s no shortage of delicious and soothing beverages to keep you warm and well. Citrus fruits are high in Vitamin C, which contributes to normal immune system function. Luckily, our nudie orange juice is just what the doctor ordered! You can also find Vitamin C in a variety of fruits that are easy to squeeze and simple to add at mealtimes. This includes grapefruit, clementines, tangerines, limes and lemons.

  • Spice up your life

When was the last time you made yourself a curry? If it’s been a while, it might be time to get cooking again. Did you know that turmeric – one of the many spices used in curries, has been used as an anti-inflammatory for thousands of years? What makes it powerful is curcumin, which gives turmeric it’s dark orange colour, and may suppress many of the molecules known to play their part in inflammation in the body.
