Everything you need to know about antioxidants

  • August 2, 2022

We hear the term ‘antioxidants’ thrown around a lot these days – especially as we try to stay as healthy as possible during flu season and COVID-19 surges, but have you ever wondered what antioxidants actually are? We’ve got all the info you need, including where you can get your next antioxidant hit with a little help from team nudie.

  • The basics

OK, so let’s get to the bottom of things. Put simply, antioxidants help to fight off free radicals generated by oxidation in the human body. They do this by slowing down cell damage from oxidation. Why is that a good thing? Well, this oxidation process creates unstable chemicals in our bodies that are better known as free radicals. These can cause damage to our precious DNA and cells. Sure, our bodies can function properly with some free radicals floating around, but if there’s an overload, this can cause irreversible damage to our cells. To make things even scarier, this damage can lead to a range of particular diseases and even the big C… But we’re not totally helpless. Mindful lifestyle and diet choices can work in our favour. Just remember, certain vices such as too much smoking, stress, alcohol, or even sunlight can even accelerate oxidation. So it’s best (as with most things) to enjoy our sun or alcohol intake in moderation – and try to steer clear of that nasty nicotine and stress if possible.

  • The good stuff

Want to know where you can get your hands on some of that antioxidant goodness? Easy, peasy! Antioxidants can be found in a range of fruits and veggies thanks to substances such as lycopene’s (found in tomatoes), anthocyanins (cranberries, blueberries, strawberries), flavonoids (tea, raspberries, citrus fruits), lutein’s (green leafy vegetables, spinach, corn), and beta-carotenes (carrot, pumpkin). You can also get your antioxidant hit through a variety of nutritional supplements such as vitamin A, C, E and minerals like copper, zinc and selenium. Too easy!

  • Get your daily dose

To get more antioxidants into your regular diet, try to keep up with two serves of fruits and five serves of vegetables a day. You could try 125 ml of fruit juice (with no added sugar) as part of a balanced diet count, which would count towards one serve of fruit. You could also eat a range of different coloured fruit and veggies for maximum benefit. Want a little help from your fave nudie blend? We’ve got you covered! Our probiotic strawberry smoothie with raspberry, antioxidant veggie blend (filled with carrot and turmeric), or nothing but orange juice ranges each contain ingredients that are known to be high in antioxidant goodness. Feelin’ and lookin’ your best never tasted so good!
