Climbing for a Cause

  • April 22, 2022

As the only medical research institute in the entire country that investigates mental health across the lifespan, the Black Dog Institute aims to create a mentally healthier world for everyone. Through research, education programs, digital tools, clinical services and public resources – the organisation is changing the lives of those living with mental health and wellbeing struggles when and where it’s needed most. This May, the team are hosting a special climb event across the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge to raise much-needed funds in the mental health space. We spoke to the team at the Black Dog Institute about the importance of Climb for a Cause and how you can get involved.

  • Climbing the bridge is such an amazing experience to begin with let alone when it’s also for a good cause – tell us a little bit about Climb for A Cause and why it’s so important for BridgeClimb to support and encourage awareness of mental wellbeing?

“Climb for a Cause is a unique fundraising event where individuals, friends, families and workmates come together and climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge for a shared purpose – a mentally healthier world. It’s important for organisations like BridgeClimb to support Black Dog Institute through fundraising because of the 1 in 5 of us who will experience symptoms of mental illness in any given year. In Australia that’s around 5 million people, and sadly around 60% of these people won’t seek help.”

  • Mental health is such an important topic in Australia right now, particularly given everything that’s happened in the last two years. Tell us more about the connection with Black Dog Institute and why they’re an important organisation for so many.

“Our early studies show that more than three quarters of people claim their mental health has worsened since the outbreak of COVID-19. We know not everyone is getting the help they need and that there’s no one-size-fits-all solution for mental illness. This means it’s important for us to continuously investigate the many ways mental health can be improved so we can ultimately help as many people as possible. Through research and evaluation, we try and find new and better ways of doing things. All funds support this.”

  • How does this climb differ from the normal bridge climb?

“Not only will every climber on May 1 be supporting the shared goal of a mentally healthier world, they will also experience a special route unique to this event.”

  • The goal this year is to raise $100,000 to improve the lives of people impacted by mental illness – how will these funds help?

“All funds raised through Climb for a Cause support Black Dog Institute’s mental health research, education programs and support services. We are proud to be the only medical research institute in Australia that works to reduce mental illness and suicide for adults and young people alike.”

  • What is your hope for this inaugural Climb for A Cause event?

“Our hope is to raise $100,000 to help improve the lives of those living with mental illness. We hope people from around Australia have the opportunity to experience this truly unique opportunity and Climb for a Cause becomes a regular event in their calendars.”

  • How can the nudie community get involved?

“The nudie community can get involved by signing up for the climb as an individual or a team, and join like-minded climbers supporting a mentally healthier world. All registrations can be done through the Climb for a Cause website.”
