Formerly known as Chinese Gooseberries in recognition of the fact that they originated from the Yangtze Valley. The fruit gets its name from a marketing strategy, naming it after the kiwi, the national bird of New Zealand, where the fruit was first commercially popularised.
Contain twice the vitamin C content of oranges.
Raw kiwifruit is also rich in the protein-dissolving enzyme actinidin, which is useful as a meat tenderiser. It’s also green (on the inside).
